Ndop is the capital of Ngo-Ketunjia Division in the Northwest Region and lies on a fertile floodplain at about 1 200 metres elevation, around 50 kilometres north-east of Bamenda. With about 70 000 inhabitants, the town is the centre of the famed Ndop rice paddies, which supply a substantial share of the rice produced in Anglophone Cameroon. The population is predominantly from the Tikar subgroups, Bamali, Bamunka, Babungo and Bamessing, the latter world-renowned for their bamboo work, clay pottery and stools bearing traditional symbols. Construction, maize, groundnuts and poultry farming round out the economy. Highlights include the Babungo palace with its ethnographic museum, the Bamessing pottery workshops and the seasonal floodplain lakes that host waterbirds. The mild plateau climate allows two rice harvests per year.
