Kumbo is the second-largest city of the Anglophone Northwest Region and sits at about 1 800 metres elevation on the Bui Plateau, making it one of the highest-altitude major cities in Cameroon. With around 130 000 inhabitants, it is the traditional centre of the influential Nso kingdom, whose Fon resides in a magnificent palace in Kumbo. The town hosts the renowned Banso Baptist Hospital, one of western Cameroon's leading medical centres, and many Catholic schools. The economy is based on arabica coffee, potatoes, maize, honey and a growing cheese industry. Highlights include the Nso royal palace, the Mantum market, the annual ngam dance and the Kifem nature reserve. The pleasantly cool mountain climate, with temperatures often below 18 °C and ample rainfall, shapes farming and makes Kumbo a climatically blessed spot in tropical Africa.
