Lake Oku is positioned at an elevation of over 2,200 meters, making it one of the highest lakes in West Africa. It is completely surrounded by the Kilum-Ijim forest, a rare and critically important stretch of montane cloud forest. The local communities consider the lake to be a sacred place, home to ancestral spirits, and strictly regulate activities around its shores. The isolated ecosystem around the lake supports numerous endemic species that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. The most notable of these is the critically endangered Oku clawed frog. The area is highly prized by ecotourists and hikers who come to explore the cool, misty trails of Mount Oku and observe the unique birdlife, including the Bannerman's turaco. The lake can be accessed via the town of Oku, typically reached from Bamenda. The roads are unpaved and can be treacherous during the wet season. The high altitude means temperatures here are significantly cooler than in the rest of Cameroon, so visitors should pack warm clothing and visit between November and March.
