Fundong is the capital of Boyo Division in the Northwest Region and lies at about 1 700 metres elevation in a dramatic mountain landscape north-east of Bamenda. With around 50 000 inhabitants, the town is the centre of the Kom kingdom, one of the oldest and most renowned traditional Tikar-Bantu kingdoms, with its famous Fon palace at Laikom. The economy rests on coffee, beans, maize, potatoes, honey and the breeding of mountain cattle. The region is famed for the spectacular Mbi Crater wildlife reserves, rare mountain monkeys, the endemic Bannerman's Turaco bird and highland grasslands among the highest grazing lands in West Africa. Other highlights include the Achain Falls, the Fon palace in Laikom with its unique wood carvings and the Bobong protected area. The cool mountain climate allows two harvests a year and makes Fundong an under-the-radar destination for trekking.
