Koh Ker (Cambodia)

Weather…

Koh Ker is a remote archaeological site in northern Cambodia that briefly served as the capital of the Khmer Empire in the 10th century under Jayavarman IV. The site is located about 100 kilometers northeast of Angkor and features an architecture quite different from the classic temples of the region. The most impressive structure is Prasat Thom, a seven-tiered sandstone pyramid rising 36 meters high, offering a wide view over the surrounding jungle. During the reign of Jayavarman IV (928-941 AD), more than 40 temples were built here before the capital was moved back to Angkor under his successor, Rajendravarman II. For a long time, the site was inaccessible due to landmines, but it has been cleared in recent decades and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2023. Koh Ker is renowned for its monumental sculptures and striking vertical construction style, which is unique in Khmer art.
