Kampong Phluk
Kampong Phluk is a traditional Khmer settlement located about 30 kilometers southeast of Siem Reap, perched on the edge of the great Tonle Sap lake. The village's name literally translates to "Harbor of the Tusks". Its architecture is entirely dictated by the extreme seasonal water fluctuations of the lake: every structure, from family homes to the local school and pagoda, is built atop slender wooden stilts reaching six to seven meters in height. Compared to other highly commercialized floating villages in the area, Kampong Phluk has largely maintained its authentic character as a working fishing community. The appearance of the village shifts dramatically with the changing seasons. During the dry season from February to May, the tall stilts are fully exposed on dry land, and residents use temporary ladders to climb from the dusty ground up into their homes. Conversely, during the rainy season between August and November, the lake's waters rise so high that they lap just inches beneath the floorboards. In these months, the streets completely vanish, and all local transportation transitions to small wooden boats. A major highlight of visiting Kampong Phluk is the adjacent flooded mangrove forest, which can be explored via small rowboats steered by local women. The dense, partially submerged canopy provides crucial shelter for various water birds and aquatic life. The optimal time for a visit is the transitional period in November and December, when the water levels are still high enough to navigate between the houses, yet the heavy monsoon rains have subsided. Most travelers arrive by taking a tuk-tuk from Siem Reap to the boat docks on the Roluos River.
