Preah Vihear Temple (Cambodia)

Weather…

The Preah Vihear Temple is a masterpiece of Khmer architecture, spectacularly situated on the edge of a 525-meter-high cliff in the Dangrek Mountains on the border between Cambodia and Thailand. It was built mainly in the 11th and 12th centuries and is dedicated to the god Shiva. Unlike most Khmer temples, which face east, Preah Vihear is aligned on a north-south axis, leading along an 800-meter-long processional way with five pavilions (gopuras). The complex gives extraordinary detail in its stonework and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Angkor's cultural peak. For a long time, ownership of the temple was disputed between Thailand and Cambodia, leading to armed conflicts until the International Court of Justice confirmed Cambodia's sovereignty in 1962 and again in 2013. Since 2008, the temple has been a UNESCO World Heritage site and remains a potent symbol of Cambodian national pride.
