Oudong
The historic ruins of Oudong stretch across the Phnom Udong mountain, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Phnom Penh. The ridge is home to several massive stupas that contain the ashes of former Cambodian kings. Climbing the covered staircases, visitors pass through dense forest to reach the summit, which provides sweeping views of the surrounding plains. At the base of the mountain, dozens of local food stalls serve traditional Khmer dishes. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April, as the ascent is much easier without the rain. Although it suffered heavy damage during the Khmer Rouge regime, Oudong remains a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site and makes for an easy half-day trip from the capital.
