Water temperature…
Cambodia's Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and forms the ecological heart of the country. The lake is defined by a unique hydrological phenomenon: during the monsoon season from June to October, the swollen Mekong River pushes so much water into the Tonle Sap River that it actually reverses its flow. This process expands the lake's surface area from roughly 2,500 square kilometers to an astonishing 12,000 square kilometers. The rising waters flood the surrounding forests, creating a massive breeding ground for various fish species. Thousands of people live on the water and along the shores in traditional floating villages such as Chong Khneas and Kampong Phluk. Local residents have adapted to the extreme water level fluctuations by building their homes either on tall wooden stilts or directly on floating bamboo rafts. Daily life here revolves almost entirely around fishing and the rhythms of the water. Boat tours offer visitors a glimpse into this unique lifestyle, passing by floating markets, clinics, and even schools resting on pontoons. The most rewarding time to take a boat trip on the lake is immediately following the wet season, between November and January. During these months, the water levels are high, and the surrounding vegetation is lush and green. Most excursions depart from the nearby city of Siem Reap, which is just a short tuk-tuk ride from the main boat docks. Recognizing its ecological importance, UNESCO designated the entire Tonle Sap basin as a Biosphere Reserve in 1997.
