East Mebon (Cambodia)

Weather…

East Mebon is a significant 10th-century Hindu temple located within the Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia, built during the reign of King Rajendravarman II. Consecrated in 953 AD, it stands on an artificial island in the center of the now-dry East Baray reservoir. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and features three concentric tiers and five central towers arranged in a quincunx pattern. A striking architectural feature is the series of life-sized sandstone elephant statues at the corners of the first and second tiers, which remain well-preserved today. The use of brick, laterite, and sandstone in its construction demonstrates the transition style of Khmer architecture during this era. Although the surrounding water has vanished, the elevated platforms still emphasize the temple's original symbolic meaning as Mount Meru in the middle of the cosmic ocean. Detailed lintels showcase intricate carvings of Indra on his elephant Airavata and Shiva on his bull Nandi.
