Kbal Spean (Cambodia)

Weather…

Kbal Spean, known as the 'River of a Thousand Lingas', is an archaeological site in the Kulen Mountains northeast of Angkor, Cambodia. Unlike most Khmer temples, this site consists of elaborate carvings directly into the sandstone bed and banks of the Stung Kbal Spean River. The engravings primarily date from the 11th to 13th centuries and depict countless phallic symbols (lingas) alongside Hindu deities such as Vishnu and Shiva. The water flowing over these sacred carvings was considered ritually purified, blessing the land before reaching the rice paddies of Angkor. Accessing the site requires a roughly 1.5-kilometer trek through dense jungle, making the visit a unique blend of nature and culture. A small waterfall at the end of the trail enhances the spiritual atmosphere of this 'forest sanctuary'. Its discovery by the Western world occurred as late as 1969 by ethnologist Jean Boulbet, highlighting the site's historical isolation.
