Ta Keo (Cambodia)

Weather…

Ta Keo is one of the most imposing temple mountains in Angkor, Cambodia, and is known as the first structure to be built almost entirely of sandstone. Its construction began in the late 10th century under King Jayavarman V, but it remained unfinished for unknown reasons, which is why it features almost no decorative carvings today. This simplicity highlights the raw power and geometric precision of its architecture, forming a five-tiered pyramid over 20 meters high. The temple was dedicated to the god Shiva and was intended to represent Mount Meru, the spiritual center of the universe. The five central towers on the top level are arranged in a quincunx pattern, conveying an impression of monumental scale. Since the stone used is extremely hard, the construction posed an enormous technical challenge for the builders of that time. The absence of ornamentation makes Ta Keo a unique object of study for Khmer building techniques, as the bare stone structures are visible without the usual reliefs.
