Phimeanakas (Cambodia)

Weather…

Phimeanakas is a Hindu temple located in the heart of the ancient city of Angkor Thom, constructed as a three-tiered laterite pyramid. Its origins date back to the late 10th century under King Rajendravarman II, and it was later significantly enhanced by King Suryavarman I as his personal temple within the Royal Palace enclosure. The name translates to "celestial palace," and according to legend, a golden nine-headed naga (serpent) inhabited the tower at the summit, transforming into a woman each night. The king was required to spend time with her before returning to his wives to ensure the welfare of the empire. Although the upper part of the temple is largely in ruins today, the structure remains impressive with its steep staircases and the galleries that encircle the topmost level. Phimeanakas is closely linked to the ceremonial architecture of Angkor and has an excellent vantage point overlooking the Baphuon and the Terrace of the Elephants. The blend of historical significance and mystical legends makes it a fascinating part of the palace grounds.
