Tonle Sap Lake (Cambodia)

Weather…

Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and a biological hotspot of immense global importance. Its defining characteristic is a unique hydrological phenomenon where the Tonle Sap River reverses its flow during the monsoon season, channeling water from the Mekong into the lake basin. This causes the lake's surface area to expand dramatically from about 2,500 square kilometers in the dry season to over 16,000 square kilometers at its peak. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997, it supports an extraordinary array of biodiversity, including over 200 fish species and numerous endangered waterbirds. The seasonal flood pulse powers one of the most productive inland fisheries in the world, supplying roughly 75% of Cambodia's annual protein intake. Historically, the lake's resources were the foundation of the Angkorian civilization, providing the agricultural surplus needed for empire-building. Today, tens of thousands of people live in floating villages, their livelihoods intricately tied to the lake's cyclical nature. Sustaining this fragile ecosystem is critical for Cambodia's food security and environmental heritage.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Tonle Sap is most easily accessed from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. Numerous operators organize boat tours to the floating villages from major landing points such as Chong Kneas.
📅
Best season
Visits during the rainy season (June to October) show the lake at its full extent, while the dry season (November to May) can make navigation difficult through the shallow and muddy channels.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is largely flat and water-dominated; coastal zones are often swampy or flooded. Exploration is done almost exclusively by boat, as the shoreline is difficult to access on foot.
🎒
What to bring
Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is vital due to the reflection off the water. Lightweight, airy clothing and a camera to capture the unique wildlife and floating houses are highly recommended.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is available at the main landing docks for tourist boats. If arriving with a private driver, they will typically wait for you at the harbor until your boat tour is completed.
⚠️
Safety
Keep a close eye on your valuables during boat trips and always wear a life jacket. The lake water is not suitable for swimming or drinking and may contain harmful bacteria or parasites.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical tour to the floating villages lasts about 3 to 5 hours. Those wishing to cross the lake (e.g., from Siem Reap to Battambang) should plan for a full-day boat journey.
