Tmatboey Ibis Site (Cambodia)

Weather…

Tmatboey is a remote community within the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Cambodia and is recognized as one of the world's most critical sites for the conservation of endangered ibis species. The village is famous for hosting the Giant Ibis, Cambodia's national bird, and the White-shouldered Ibis, both of which are extremely rare. In the early 2000s, an innovative ecotourism project was launched here, directly linking bird protection to the economic well-being of the villagers. Farmers receive bonuses for successfully protecting bird nests instead of collecting eggs or destroying the habitat. The region is characterized by deciduous dipterocarp forests and seasonal wetlands that provide good feeding grounds. Visitors stay in a community-operated lodge, and local guides lead them to observation points. The project has led to a stabilization of the ibis populations in Tmatboey. Internationally, it is cited as a prime example of successful 'conservation enterprise,' where nature protection and poverty alleviation are effectively combined.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season, from December to April, is undoubtedly the best time for birdwatching as the forest pools recede. During this period, the endangered ibises concentrate heavily around the remaining water sources.
🌅
Best time of day
Pre-dawn starts are absolutely critical if you wish to see the elusive Giant and White-shouldered Ibises leaving their roosts. Late afternoon is also productive as the birds return to their nesting trees before dark.
📜
Etiquette
Absolute silence and strict adherence to the local guides' instructions are vital so as not to spook these incredibly shy birds. Using flash photography or attempting to approach the nesting sites is completely forbidden.
🎒
What to bring
Premium binoculars or a high-powered spotting scope are essential for observing the birds safely from a great distance. Wear subdued, camouflage-colored, lightweight clothing and bring effective mosquito repellent.
🧭
Getting there
This remote village site is usually accessed via a rough dirt road from the provincial capital, requiring a sturdy 4x4 vehicle. Visiting must be arranged through the community-based ecotourism project working in the area.
🦌
What to expect
Locating these extremely rare forest birds requires significant patience and walking long distances through dense scrub. You must be prepared to wait quietly in concealed hides near watering holes for hours at a time.
