Phnom Kulen National Park (Cambodia)

Weather…

Phnom Kulen National Park centers around the sacred mountain massif that is considered the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. It was here in 802 AD that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java and proclaimed himself a universal monarch. The park is home to significant archaeological sites, most notably Kbal Spean, also known as the 'River of a Thousand Lingas,' featuring intricate Hindu carvings directly on the riverbed. Another spiritual landmark is the Preah Ang Thom pagoda, which houses a massive 16th-century reclining Buddha carved into a natural sandstone boulder. The natural landscape is characterized by tropical rainforests, diverse wildlife, and iconic twin waterfalls that attract both pilgrims and tourists. Geologically, the plateau served as the primary quarry for the sandstone used to construct the temples of Angkor. Today, the national park plays a vital ecological role as the primary watershed for the Siem Reap region, making its conservation essential for local water security.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Most visitors hire a car or a tuk-tuk from Siem Reap for the drive, which takes about an hour and a half to the main entrance. The mountain road is typically one-way during specific morning and afternoon hours.
📅
Best season
The wet season from June to November makes the waterfalls particularly impressive and lush. The dry season from December to May gives easier road conditions but less dramatic water flow.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The area features paved walkways near the main attractions and rugged dirt paths leading through the jungle to ancient ruins. Sturdy footwear is helpful for exploring beyond the central temple.
🎒
What to bring
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip for the uneven temple steps and jungle trails. Bring plenty of drinking water, insect repellent, and modest clothing to cover shoulders and knees.
🅿️
Parking
There are designated parking areas near the main waterfall and the prominent reclining Buddha temple. Arriving early in the day helps secure a spot before the large tour groups arrive.
⚠️
Safety
Stay on clearly marked paths to avoid any unexploded ordnance remaining in remote jungle areas. Be extremely cautious of slippery rocks around the waterfalls, especially after recent rainfall.
⏱️
Time needed
A comprehensive visit covering the main temples, river carvings, and waterfalls takes roughly half a day to a full day. Many travelers combine it with a trip to the nearby Banteay Srei temple.
