Livingstone-Stanley Monument

About 12 kilometers south of Bujumbura, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, lies the village of Mugere. Here rests a massive boulder known as the Livingstone-Stanley Monument. It commemorates the visit of British missionary Dr. David Livingstone and journalist Henry Morton Stanley in November 1871. After Stanley famously found Livingstone in Ujiji (in modern-day Tanzania) with the words "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?", they traveled north together to investigate whether the Rusizi River flowed into or out of Lake Tanganyika. The monument itself is quite understated: a massive, natural rock bearing a simple plaque engraved with the names of the two explorers and the date of their encampment. Despite its modest appearance, the site holds immense historical significance regarding the 19th-century European exploration of Africa and the relentless search for the source of the Nile. The surrounding scenery is equally compelling, offering sweeping, tranquil views over the vast expanse of the lake. A short excursion to the monument is easily combined with a scenic drive along the coastal road from Bujumbura. Beyond its historical appeal, visitors can enjoy the laid-back lakeside atmosphere and stop by small local eateries to taste freshly caught fish. The site is open to visitors year-round, but the clear, dry days between June and August provide the best visibility for spotting the distant mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo across the water.
