Getting there
The reserve is located in Bururi province and is accessible via the main RN3 highway from Bujumbura. The approach passes through hilly terrain and usually requires a vehicle with high clearance.
Best season
The dry seasons from June to August and December to January are best for wildlife viewing. During these months, forest trails are drier, and primates are easier to spot among the thinning foliage.
Terrain & paths
The reserve comprises dense tropical forest on hilly ground with unpaved forest trails. The terrain can be steep in places and requires a reasonable level of fitness for longer guided walks.
What to bring
Long-sleeved clothing is essential for protection against insects and thorny undergrowth. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring insect repellent along with plenty of drinking water for the forest.
