Višegrad Old Town (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Old Town of Višegrad, often referred to as Stari Grad Pavlovina, sits atop a high cliff overlooking the confluence of the Rzav and Drina rivers. It was constructed in the 14th century by the Pavlović noble family to secure the strategic bridge and river crossing. The fortress was a key component of a sophisticated defensive network protecting the eastern reaches of the Bosnian Kingdom. Within its walls, residential buildings for the garrison and warehouses for long-distance trade were maintained. Upon the arrival of the Ottomans in 1462, the fortress was captured and initially used as a military outpost before the population shifted to the valley floor, where the famous Drina Bridge was later built. The remnants of the stone walls and towers remain visible today, offering a commanding view of modern Višegrad. The site's history is inextricably linked to medieval power struggles and the subsequent cultural transformation under Ottoman rule.
