Lhuntse

Lhuntse is located in the remote northeastern corner of Bhutan and is a region of immense historical and cultural significance. The town serves as the administrative capital of the Lhuntse District and is dramatically perched on a cliff overlooking the Kuri Chhu river. Lhuntse is most famous as the ancestral home of the ruling Wangchuck dynasty; the nearby village of Kurtoe is the birthplace of the ancestors of the current kings. The Lhuntse Dzong, constructed in 1654, is a masterpiece of Bhutanese fortress architecture and continues to function as the district's religious and administrative center. The region is world-renowned for its textile weaving, particularly the 'Kishuthara,' an intricately patterned silk textile handcrafted by the women of Khoma and Kurtoe villages.
