Noakhali is a coastal city in southeastern Bangladesh with a unique geographical history shaped by the shifting waters of the Meghna River. The original town of Noakhali was largely lost to river erosion in the 19th century, leading to the establishment of the current administrative center, Maijdee, in 1948. Its name, meaning 'new canal', dates back to a 17th-century drainage project initiated to mitigate flooding in the region. Today, the city is a major commercial hub for agricultural products, specifically coconut, betel nuts, and rice, and is a vital center for the fishing industry. Noakhali is culturally distinct, known for its unique dialect and strong religious traditions. Historically, it gained global prominence in 1946 when Mahatma Gandhi visited on a peace mission to restore communal harmony. Despite being prone to cyclones and tidal surges, the city has developed resilient infrastructure and serves as an important educational and administrative base for the greater Noakhali district.
