Tanguar Haor is a vast wetland ecosystem located in the Sunamganj District of northeastern Bangladesh, covering an area of approximately 100 square kilometers. It was designated as the country's second Ramsar site in 2000, acknowledging its international significance for biodiversity conservation. The landscape consists of numerous interconnected water bodies that merge into a single massive inland sea during the monsoon season. Tanguar Haor acts as a critical sanctuary for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds traveling from Siberia and the Himalayas each winter. Beyond its avian population, the area supports over 140 fish species, providing a primary source of livelihood for local fishing communities. The region is also famous for its freshwater swamp forests, dominated by the indigenous Koroch trees that are adapted to seasonal flooding.

Usually approached from Sunamganj, where visitors rent traditional country boats or small engine boats to navigate the vast wetlands. The journey starts at local docks.
Best season
Winter, typically from December to February, is exceptional for witnessing the massive flocks of migratory birds arriving here. The weather is relatively cool and dry.

A dynamic flooded basin that transitions between a massive lake in the monsoon and a network of shallow ponds in the dry season. Navigation is entirely by boat.
