Shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal
The Shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal in Sylhet is one of the most revered religious sites in Bangladesh, serving as the final resting place of the celebrated 14th-century Sufi saint. Hazrat Shahjalal is widely credited with introducing and spreading Islam in the Bengal region, arriving in Sylhet in 1303 with 313 companions to overthrow a local tyrant. The shrine complex, or Dargah, is a sprawling area that includes the tomb of the saint, an ancient mosque, and several halls for religious gatherings. A unique feature of the shrine is a large pond filled with sacred catfish, which according to local legend, were transformed from the enemies of the saint; pilgrims regularly feed them as an act of devotion. Every day, thousands of devotees from all faiths visit the shrine to offer prayers and seek blessings. The site remains a powerful symbol of spiritual peace and a central pillar of the cultural and religious identity of the people of Sylhet and broader Bangladesh.
