Kurjey Lhakhang (Bhutan)

Weather…

Kurjey Lhakhang, located in the Bumthang valley, is one of Bhutan's most sacred sites, deeply associated with the life and deeds of Guru Rinpoche. The name 'Kurjey' translates to 'Body Imprint,' referring to the 8th-century cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated and left an imprint of his body in the rock face. The temple complex comprises three main buildings: the oldest section was constructed in 1652 by Minjur Tempa and encloses the sacred cave. The second temple was commissioned in 1900 by the first King of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck, while the third was built in 1984 by the Queen Mother Ashi Kesang Wangchuck. Surrounded by 108 chortens, the site is a vital spiritual center where significant religious ceremonies are held. The interiors are adorned with exquisite murals and statues depicting the introduction of Buddhism to Bhutan. A massive cypress tree nearby is believed to have sprouted from Guru Rinpoche's walking stick. Pilgrims from across the nation visit this site to seek purification and spiritual blessings.
