Jambay Lhakhang (Bhutan)

Weather…

Jambay Lhakhang in Bumthang is one of the oldest and most historically significant temples in Bhutan. Established in the 7th century (around 659 AD) by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, it is part of a legendary network of 108 temples built across the Himalayas to subdue a giant demoness. According to legend, this specific temple was constructed on the demoness's left knee. The inner sanctum is dedicated to Maitreya, the Future Buddha, whose large statue serves as the central focal point of worship. Despite several renovations over the centuries, the site has maintained its ancient spiritual atmosphere and original layout. The temple is famous for hosting the annual Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival, featuring traditional masked dances, including the 'Tercham' (naked dance), intended to ward off evil spirits. The architecture reflects early Himalayan styles with thick walls and centuries-old murals. As a rare surviving structure from the dawn of Buddhism in the region, it remains a vital site for both religious practice and historical study.
