La Roche-en-Ardenne is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Belgian Ardennes, picturesquely situated in a bend of the river Ourthe. The town is overlooked by the imposing ruins of a medieval castle built between the 11th and 14th centuries on a rocky promontory. During World War II, the town suffered massive destruction in the winter of 1944-1945 due to Allied and German shelling during the Battle of the Bulge, a history commemorated today by a British monument and an American tank. The local museum is extensively dedicated to this military history and the liberation by Allied forces. Beyond its historical significance, the town serves as a hub for outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking in the dense surrounding forests. Local gastronomy is famous for its Ardennes ham specialties and traditional game dishes, which attract visitors from all over Europe. Today, the small town functions as an administrative and economic center for the rural Famenne-Ardenne region.
