Calestienne
The Calestienne is a remarkably narrow yet geologically wealthy strip of limestone stretching across Belgium along the northern flank of the Ardennes. The stratum consists of Middle Devonian limestone that has been exposed by millions of years of erosion, creating a striking topographical step today. The region is renowned throughout Europe for its dense concentration of karst phenomena, encompassing deep sinkholes, subterranean rivers, and extensive stalactite caves. Because the highly permeable soils warm up quickly, a unique thermophilic flora has developed, including many rare species of wild orchids thriving on the sun-baked calcareous grasslands. Geographically, this zone spans only a few kilometers in width, but it profoundly shapes the landscape with its steep, rocky outcrops. Furthermore, the Calestienne provides crucial ecological niches for numerous endangered insect species.
