Viliya River (Belarus)

Weather…

The Viliya, known in neighboring Lithuania as the Neris, is a pretty 510-kilometer-long river, of which 276 kilometers lie within the territory of Belarus. It originates in the northern foothills of the Minsk Upland and flows in a northwesterly direction, forming the significant Vileyskoye Reservoir, which is considered the largest artificial body of water in the country. This reservoir is of crucial importance for the water supply of the Belarusian capital, Minsk. The valley of the Viliya is famous for its varied landscape, characterized by rolling hills, deep pine forests, and steep riverbanks. Along the river, there are numerous archaeological sites, including ancient burial mounds that bear witness to the early settlement of the region. The clean and relatively fast-flowing waters of the Viliya provide a good habitat for salmonid fish and are extremely popular among kayakers.
