Volozhin (Valozhin), located west of Minsk, is a town of immense cultural and historical significance, particularly within the context of Eastern European Jewish history. First mentioned in the 14th century, the town achieved global renown in the 19th century as the home of the Volozhin Yeshiva. Founded in 1803, it was hailed as the 'mother of all yeshivas' and served as the premier institution for Jewish religious scholarship, influencing communities worldwide. The town's architectural profile is highlighted by the grand Tyszkiewicz Palace, a Neoclassical manor built in the early 1800s that currently serves as an administrative building. Other notable landmarks include the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Joseph (1816) and the Orthodox Transfiguration Church. Volozhin is situated near the Naliboki Forest, one of the largest ancient woodland tracts in Belarus, lending the area high ecological value. Today, Volozhin balances its rich multicultural legacy with a productive agricultural economy and a growing interest in nature-based tourism.
