Novopolotsk is a purely industrial city in northern Belarus, located on the left bank of the Western Dvina River. Standing in stark contrast to its ancient, deeply historical neighbor Polotsk, Novopolotsk was established only in 1958 as a purpose-built settlement to support the construction of a massive oil refining complex. The city's layout is a prime example of mid-20th-century Soviet urban planning, featuring wide, straight avenues and large functionalist housing blocks. The lifeblood of Novopolotsk is the colossal 'Naftan' petrochemical plant, one of the largest oil refineries in Europe, which anchors the economy of the entire Vitebsk Region. Despite its heavy industrial focus, the city is a significant educational hub, hosting modern faculties of Polotsk State University, and is known for its strong ice hockey culture.
