Mahilyou City Hall (Belarus)

Weather…

The Mahilyou City Hall is an impressive symbol of municipal independence and an architectural highlight on the banks of the Dnieper River. Originally built of wood in 1578 after the city received Magdeburg rights, the building was replaced by a magnificent stone structure in the 17th century. The 47-meter-tall octagonal tower served for centuries as a watchtower and a proud landmark of the city. During the Great Northern War and subsequent conflicts, the city hall was damaged and repaired multiple times before being regrettably completely demolished in 1957. Through an ambitious project, however, the historic building was reconstructed and officially reopened in 2008. Today, it houses the Museum of the History of Mahilyou. A special attraction is the mechanical trumpeter named Magislav, who plays a fanfare from the balcony of the city hall tower three times a day, serving as a reminder of the city's rich historical heritage.
