Logoysk Impact Crater (Belarus)

Weather…

The Logoysk Impact Crater, located near the capital city of Minsk, is one of the most extraordinary, albeit completely invisible, geological formations in Belarus. It measures approximately 15 to 17 kilometers in diameter but remains entirely hidden from the surface, buried beneath an 800-meter-thick layer of younger Pleistocene and Quaternary sediments. The structure was discovered only by accident in 1973 during deep geological core drilling operations searching for mineral deposits. Scientists believe the crater was formed approximately 42.3 million years ago during the Eocene epoch following the impact of a massive asteroid estimated to be 650 meters across. The unimaginable force of the collision shattered the Earth's crust, causing rock deformations and brecciation that extend over 1,000 meters into the ground. Although the structure has no physical topographic expression on the modern surface relief, the crater generates an extremely distinct and measurable gravimetric and magnetic anomaly that continues to fascinate geologists today.
