Khatyn Memorial
The Khatyn Memorial, located near Minsk, is a deeply moving monument dedicated to the victims of World War II in Belarus. On March 22, 1943, the former village of Khatyn was completely burned down by an SS battalion, and almost all of its 149 residents, including 75 children, were murdered. The memorial complex, opened in 1969, was designed by architect Leonid Levin and sculptor Sergei Selikhanov. It consists of symbolic chimneys marking the sites of the burned houses, with bells that toll every 30 seconds. The centerpiece of the site is the poignant bronze sculpture The Unconquered Man, which depicts the sole adult survivor, Yosif Kaminsky, holding his dead son in his arms. Khatyn represents over 600 Belarusian villages that suffered a similar tragic fate during the war.
