Ashmyany Ridge (Belarus)

Weather…

The Ashmyany Ridge, a striking segment within the broader Oshmyany Upland in northwestern Belarus, is a continuous chain of steep, highly fractured terminal moraine hills. The elevations, whose highest peaks reach the 320-meter mark, delineate the outermost boundaries of historical glacial advances. Geomorphologically, the ridge is characterized by unusually steep slopes, some exceeding inclination angles of 10 to 15 degrees, a rare sight in the otherwise gently rolling Belarusian topography. Another prominent feature of this hill chain is the massive presence of gigantic Scandinavian granite erratic boulders, which were dragged along by the glaciers and deposited here as rocky debris. Because the soils are extremely stony, sandy, and heavily podzolized, large-scale agricultural utilization has historically been virtually impossible. Consequently, the flanks and summits of the Ashmyany Ridge remain overgrown to this day with dense, difficult-to-penetrate coniferous and mixed forests.
