Krevo Castle Ruins (Belarus)

Weather…

The Krevo Castle ruins mark one of the most historically significant sites in Belarusian and Polish-Lithuanian history. This majestic fortress, built of fieldstone and brick at the beginning of the 14th century, was the first fully stone-built castle of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Krevo achieved world-historical significance in 1385 with the signing of the Union of Krevo. This alliance between the Lithuanian Grand Duke Jogaila and the Kingdom of Poland laid the foundation for the subsequent Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The castle survived many turbulent eras and suffered massive destruction, particularly during the artillery bombardments of World War I, as the front line ran directly through the village. Today, imposing remains of the massive curtain walls and the main tower are preserved, undergoing extensive conservation efforts since 2017.
