Palace of Shaki Khans (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Palace of Shaki Khans is a premier example of 18th-century Azerbaijani palace architecture, serving as the summer residence for the rulers of the Shaki Khanate. Built in 1797 under the reign of Muhammad Hasan Khan, it is situated within the fortress walls in the city's historic upper district. The two-story structure is internationally renowned for its 'Shebeke' windows, intricate wooden lattices fitted with thousands of pieces of colored glass without the use of nails or glue. The interior walls are completely covered with animated murals depicting hunting scenes, heroic battles, and elaborate floral and geometric patterns. Two ancient plane trees, dating back to 1530, flank the palace entrance, adding to the site's historical ambiance. In 2019, the Historic Centre of Shaki with the Khan's Palace was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The palace stands as a testament to the high level of craftsmanship and artistic achievement in the Caucasus during the late medieval and early modern transition.
