Jalilabad lies in southern Azerbaijan in the fertile Mughan plain, about two hundred kilometres from Baku, and with around forty thousand inhabitants is the economic centre of an important agricultural district. The city was named after the Azerbaijani writer and enlightener Jalil Mammadguluzadeh (1869-1932), editor of the influential satirical magazine Molla Nasreddin. The warm continental climate region permits a wide range of crops: grapes for the local wineries, grains, sunflowers, soybeans, as well as pomegranates and persimmons are grown here. Notable sights include the modern Heydar Aliyev Centre, the central bazaar offering local specialities such as pickled vegetables and cornelian-cherry syrup, and the numerous Bronze Age burial mounds and standing stones found in the surrounding steppe, preserving valuable archaeological heritage.
