Babazanan

A nearby ancient settlement area that gives a quiet look into the region's past.

Salyan lies about a hundred and thirty kilometres south of Baku in the alluvial plain of the Kura River, just before it empties into the Caspian Sea, and has around forty-five thousand inhabitants. The region is characterised by a semi-arid climate, vast steppes and fertile alluvial soils, which is why the town has been, since the Middle Ages, an important centre for fishing, especially for sturgeon and caviar, as well as for cotton and watermelon cultivation. In the 1960s oil fields were developed here, contributing to the region's prosperity to this day. The nearby Shirvan National Park protects the last populations of goitered gazelle and forms a major corridor for migrating birds. Notable sights include the Juma Mosque, the central bazaar and the many mud volcanoes in the surroundings, which rank among the largest in the world.
