The Gizil-Agach State Reserve was established in 1929 and remains one of Azerbaijan's oldest and most vital nature sanctuaries. Located on the southwestern coast of the Caspian Sea in the Lankaran district, the reserve covers a vast area of 88,360 hectares, encompassing the Gizil-Agach Bay and surrounding wetlands. In 1975, it was designated as a Ramsar site of international importance due to its role as a premier wintering and stopover location for millions of migratory birds. The reserve is home to spectacular species such as greater flamingos, pelicans, herons, and a vast array of waterfowl traveling from Siberia and Northern Europe. Its landscape is a complex of shallow lagoons, reed beds, and marshes, which provide rich feeding and nesting grounds for birds and essential spawning areas for Caspian fish species.
