Bilasuvar lies in southern Azerbaijan in the broad Mughan Steppe directly on the border with Iran and has around thirty thousand inhabitants. The Bilasuvar border crossing is one of the most important transport nodes between Azerbaijan and Iran and plays a central role in the international freight traffic of the North-South Corridor. The name of the town derives from the medieval term meaning mounted warrior and goes back to the thirteenth-century Salghurid dynasty. The surrounding steppe is one of the driest areas in the country, but thanks to the extensive irrigation network of the Mughan and Mil canals, cotton, sugar beet, wheat and alfalfa are grown here on a large scale. Notable sights include the modern Heydar Aliyev Centre, the central bazaar and the remnants of medieval caravanserais along the historic trade route.
