Talysh Mountains (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Talysh Mountains extend along southeastern Azerbaijan near the Iranian border, creating a unique climatic and ecological enclave. Unlike much of the country, the climate here is subtropical and highly humid, fostering the development of the famous Hyrcanian forests. These forests are relict ecosystems from the Tertiary period and are home to rare tree species like the Persian Ironwood (Parrotia persica). The highest point of the range is Kyumyurkyuy peak at 2,477 meters. The region is characterized by deep, densely forested valleys and mineral-rich springs that have been known for their medicinal properties since antiquity. The Hirkan National Park protects this precious environment, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023. Culturally, the region is home to the Talysh people, who maintain their own distinct language and rich traditions. The mountains serve as a vital refuge for the endangered Persian leopard and other rare vertebrate species. Today, the area is a center for tea cultivation and sustainable ecotourism.

Best season
Spring and early summer are great for seeing the lush, green biodiversity and flourishing nature found deep within the thick forests of this mountain range.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Steep, densely forested slopes with narrow trails await you; these paths can often be muddy and slippery after rain, making the climb more challenging for hikers.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof hiking boots, long pants for protection in the thick forest, and a light rain jacket are strongly recommended due to the humid climate in the region.

Parking
Small parking spots are found in Lerik or at the start of specific forest trails; however, there are no large, guarded visitor parking lots in the remote areas.
