Hirkan National Park (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

Hirkan National Park is situated in the Lankaran and Astara districts of southeastern Azerbaijan, encompassing the lush Talysh Mountains and the Caspian coastline. Established in 2004 and expanded in 2008, the park protects the unique Hyrcanian forests, which were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023. These forests are a "refugium" from the Tertiary period, containing many relict and endemic tree species that survived the last ice age, such as the Persian Ironwood. The park's humid subtropical climate supports an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, including the endangered Persian leopard. Elevation ranges from below sea level near the coast to over 2,400 meters in the mountains, creating distinct vegetation zones. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting the integrity of this ancient forest ecosystem and supporting the recovery of rare predator populations.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The national park is primarily accessed from the city of Lankaran or nearby towns, with secondary mountain roads leading towards the protected forest borders where typical hiking routes begin.
📅
Best season
Spring and early autumn are generally the most rewarding times to visit, providing pleasant hiking weather and showcasing the lively foliage without the heavy summer humidity or muddy winter trails.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Visitors hike through steep, densely wooded mountain slopes characterized by thick subtropical vegetation, ancient Ironwood trees, and occasionally slippery trails due to the region's high rainfall.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof hiking shoes with aggressive treads are essential to handle the muddy inclines, alongside breathable layers, a reliable rain jacket, and basic first aid supplies for remote forest exploration.
🅿️
Parking
Parking spots are usually available in the peripheral villages or near designated administrative entry points, from which visitors must continue their journey on foot into the dense forest terrain.
⚠️
Safety
Because the trails can be faintly marked and the forest canopy is extremely dense, hiring a local park guide is highly recommended to avoid getting disoriented and to spot elusive native wildlife safely.
⏱️
Time needed
Most hiking excursions last anywhere from three to six hours depending on the chosen trail, but passionate naturalists often spend multiple days exploring the diverse botanical wonders of the Talysh range.
