Lerik
Perched high in the Talysh Mountains near the Iranian border, Lerik is enveloped in myths and documented realities of extraordinary human longevity. The town’s crisp, unpolluted mountain air, natural spring waters, and organic local diet have produced a disproportionate number of centenarians. To celebrate this unique phenomenon, Lerik houses the world's only Museum of Longevity, detailing the lives of locals who purportedly lived well past 110 years. The surrounding landscapes are panoramic, featuring deep gorges, dense forests, and hidden waterfalls like those in the nearby Relax tourist zone. Hiking and horseback riding are the primary activities, allowing travelers to deeply connect with the isolated mountain environment. The local gastronomy is heavily based on Talysh traditions, offering fresh river fish, herb-rich lavangi (stuffed poultry), and incredibly flavorful mountain honey. Lerik is accessed via a winding, spectacularly scenic 50-kilometer mountain road climbing up from the southern city of Lankaran. Due to the high elevation, winters here are harsh and snowy, isolating the town at times. Therefore, the convenient time to visit is from late spring to early autumn, when the mountain valleys are bustling green and the temperature remains comfortably cool.
