Greinburg Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Greinburg Castle is a magnificent Renaissance palace in Grein on the Danube and is considered one of Austria's oldest residential castles. Built around 1491 by the Prüschenk brothers, it marks the transition from a medieval castle to a stately home. The Sala Terrena is unique, with its walls decorated with elaborate pebble mosaics made from thousands of Danube stones. The splendid arcaded courtyard and the Gothic Diamond Vault are among the architectural highlights of the complex. Since the early 19th century, the castle has been owned by the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, whose family history is documented here. The stately representation rooms and the castle chapel are now open to visitors. Perched on a rocky outcrop, the castle has an impressive view of the Strudengau region and the Danube. It also houses the Upper Austrian Shipping Museum, which illuminates the region's history.
