San Ignacio Miní (Argentina)

Weather…

San Ignacio Miní is the best-preserved Jesuit mission in Argentina, located in the Misiones Province. It was originally founded in 1610 and relocated to its current site in 1696 to escape attacks from slave hunters coming from Brazil. The complex is an outstanding example of the Guarani Baroque style, a fusion of European Baroque architecture and indigenous local craftsmanship. The imposing red sandstone ruins include the monumental church, a hospital, schools, and residential buildings for the indigenous Guarani population. At its peak in 1733, more than 3,000 people lived here in a highly organized community. Since 1984, San Ignacio Miní has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as an important historical record of the missionary experiments of the 17th and 18th centuries in South America.
