Capitán Miranda, a small town in the Itapúa Department of southern Paraguay, lies about 25 kilometres north-east of Encarnación along Route 6 in a hilly landscape dominated by yerba mate, soybean and rice cultivation. It was founded in 1907 and named after Captain Pedro Miranda, a hero of the War of the Triple Alliance. The town developed in the early twentieth century thanks to the railway connection and to agricultural colonisation by German, Ukrainian and Polish immigrants. With around 12 000 inhabitants Capitán Miranda is a multicultural community. Economically the town relies on yerba mate, soybean, maize and rice farming and on cattle ranching. Capitán Miranda is famous nationwide for the Hostería Capitán Miranda and its ghost stories, the area around the town is considered one of the most mystical in Paraguay, with numerous legends of paranormal phenomena attracting thousands of curious visitors each year.
