Tomás Romero Pereira, a town in the Itapúa Department of southern Paraguay, lies about 100 kilometres north-east of Encarnación in a fertile, agriculturally shaped region. It was founded in 1955 and named after the Paraguayan politician Tomás Romero Pereira, who briefly served as provisional president of the country in 1954 and drove the state colonisation policy. Under this policy, thousands of Brazilian, German and Japanese immigrants were directed into the region, where they cleared the former Atlantic Forest area and brought it under soybean, maize and wheat cultivation. With around 25 000 inhabitants Tomás Romero Pereira is a typical agricultural centre with a multicultural population. Economically the town relies on soybean, maize and wheat farming, cattle ranching, sawmills and logistics. Several large cooperatives and soybean mills form the backbone of the local economy. Notable sights include the modern parish church and the Mercado Municipal showcasing agricultural specialities.
