Obligado, a town in the Itapúa Department of southern Paraguay, lies about 30 kilometres north-east of Encarnación along Route 6 between Hohenau and Bella Vista. It was founded in 1912 by German immigrants as part of the three-town German colony that also includes Hohenau and Bella Vista. The name honours the Paraguayan general Pablo Obligado. Today the town has around 11 000 inhabitants, many of them descendants of the original German settlers who still preserve the German language and culture. Obligado is nationally famous for its German bakeries, cheese factories and breweries and for the annual Fiesta Schmeckfest, celebrating German cuisine, folk dances and music. Economically the town relies on yerba mate, soybean and maize farming, dairy production and tourism. Notable sights include the German parish church, the Centro Cultural Aleman, several private museums with mementos of the first settlers and the typical half-timbered houses in German style.
