Hohenau, a town in the Itapúa Department of southern Paraguay, lies about 35 kilometres north-east of Encarnación along Route 6 and is one of the oldest German settlements in Paraguay. It was founded in 1900 by German immigrants from Bavaria and Austria, who established here an agricultural colony with the permission of the Paraguayan government. The town takes its name from the Austrian locality of Hohenau in Lower Austria. Today around 15 000 people live here, many of them descendants of the original German settlers who still preserve the German language and culture. Hohenau is nationally famous for its German bakeries, breweries and sausage products. Economically the town relies on yerba mate, soybean and maize farming, mate processing (one of Paraguay's largest mate factories is located here) and tourism. Notable sights include the German parish church, the local history museum with documents of the first settlers and the annual Oktoberfest featuring German music and beer.
