Trinidad
The ruins of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná are widely considered the most impressive remaining examples of the Jesuit missions in South America. Founded in 1706, this settlement was part of a unique religious and social experiment that housed thousands of indigenous Guaraní people. The complex is an architectural masterpiece crafted from local red sandstone, blending European Baroque motifs with distinct indigenous artistic influences. Today, its grand plazas and massive stone walls stand as a silent testament to the region's complex colonial past. Key highlights include the Great Church, famous for its intricate stone carvings that depict musical angels and various biblical scenes. The expansive central plaza is flanked by the remains of Guaraní dwellings, showcasing the highly organized layout of these communities. A major draw for modern tourists is the evening light and sound show, which uses music and projections to bring the mission's history to life against the backdrop of the illuminated ruins. Trinidad is located in the Itapúa Department, roughly 30 kilometers northeast of the city of Encarnación. The site is easily accessible via public bus or rental car. The best times to visit are during the spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May) to avoid the intense summer heat. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes and sun protection, as exploring the entire complex involves significant walking across open grounds.
